Latin

Our online Latin courses take students from introductory to advanced levels of Latin as a spoken and written world language, and give students a deeper understanding of Roman culture. The ultimate goal is to prepare students to read and translate Latin literature by helping them develop the knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and cultural context necessary to facilitate the successful reading of authentic texts. The courses will also help students learn more about the English language and about similarities and differences between Western Civilization 2,000 years ago and today.

Units are organized thematically and based upon cultural topics. Each unit focuses on an aspect of Roman daily life, history and politics, mythology and religion, literature, art, or archeology. Each lesson within a unit is a subtopic of that unit. The topics of each unit and lesson have been carefully selected to provide students with a general, yet thorough introduction to Roman culture. Vocabulary has been carefully selected for each lesson so that exercises and reading passages focus on the lesson’s theme. In addition to learning Latin vocabulary, students will discover English words that are derived from certain Latin vocabulary words. As Latin grammatical concepts are introduced in each thematic unit, relevant grammatical concepts are reviewed in English to help students reinforce and expand their knowledge of English grammar.
